DIABETES FACTS
There are 20.8 million Americans who have diabetes, 7.8% of the population. Of these, roughly one-third are unaware they have the disease. In addition, another 54 million people in the U.S. have pre-diabetes.

  • Of the 20.8 million Americans with diabetes, 90-95% has type 2 diabetes.
  • Nearly 18.3% of the United States population aged 60 and older has diabetes.
  • People with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have heart disease or suffer a stroke.

Who is the ADA?
The American Diabetes Association is the most trusted source of information on diabetes for people with the disease, their families and caregivers, health care professionals and the public, and is the nation’s leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy.

Founded in 1940, the Association has been funding innovative diabetes research since 1955.
